When I was in Asia I bought a leather bag. The seller wanted, in my opinion, a great price. So I bought it immediately. When I walked away with a good feeling, the seller started laughing behind my back. That was the moment I realised that I was lifted.
Bargaining is a game
In many countries in Asia and Africa you can buy really cheap stuff. But in order to get the best price you have to bargain. In these countries it is a real game between the seller and the buyer.
The first time I started to negotiate about the price, I felt very uncomfortable. The buyer asked 1000 baht, I told him that it was to high for a simple shirt and offered to pay 800. He agreed immediately, so I knew I had paid way to much. Because of my experiences I tried to make bargaining easier by following a few steps.
My 7 steps of bargaining
1. Find out what the locals pay
Before you can bargain, you should try to find out the original price. You can do this by asking the locals or search on the internet.
2. Determine what you want to pay
When you know what the original price is, you must determine the maximum amount you’re willing to pay.
3. Don’t be over-exited
Even when you really love the product. If the seller sees that you’re enthousiastic about it, he starts with an even higher price.
4. Start at 10-20% of the price
Okay, now you’re ready to bargain! You must start bargaining at a very low price. Because if the seller agrees directly you have paid way to much! 🙁
5. Don’t feel embarrassed
To start at a very low price. Because the seller starts at a very high price. You should see it as a sport.
6. Keep up, you’re almost there
Keep going with negotiating about the price. Until you have reached the price you’re willing to pay.
7. Don’t be afraid to walk away
If you don’t get the price you were looking for, just walk away and don’t buy it. Try somewhere else, ’cause there are many places which sell the same thing.
Tip: Make sure you have got the exact amount of cash with you, this makes the bargaining easier 😉
